The name حدادة (Haddadeh) is an occupational surname of deep Levantine roots. Derived from the Arabic root ḥ-d-d — meaning “to sharpen” or “to forge” — it literally translates to blacksmith or ironworker. For centuries across Palestine, Syria, Lebanon, and Jordan, families who worked iron carried this name. They were the craftsmen who forged tools for farmers, blades for builders, and horseshoes for merchants. The name is a profession turned into an identity — and like iron itself, it endures.

الاسم حدادة لقبٌ مهني ضاربٌ جذوره في عمق البلاد الشامية. مشتقٌ من الجذر العربي «ح-د-د»، بمعنى «يُحدّد» أو «يصنع من الحديد»، ويعني حرفياً الحداد أو صانع الحديد. لقرون عبر فلسطين وسوريا ولبنان والأردن، حمل هذا الاسم أبناء العائلات التي اشتغلت بالحديد — حرفيون صنعوا الأدوات للمزارعين، والأبواب للبيوت، والنعال لخيل التجار. الاسم مهنة تحوّلت هوية — وكالحديد تماماً، يبقى ويدوم.

🏔️ Nablus — The Mother City · نابلس — أم المدن

The Haddadeh family traces its origins to Nablus (نابلس), one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world — nestled between Mount Ebal and Mount Gerizim in the northern West Bank of Palestine. Known in antiquity as Shechem, and later renamed Flavia Neapolis by the Roman Emperor Vespasian in 72 CE, Nablus has been at the crossroads of civilizations for over 9,000 years.

Nablus is legendary across the Arab world for its kanafeh (كنافة) — a cheese pastry soaked in sugar syrup that has no equal — and for its olive oil soap, produced in the city’s ancient factories for centuries and traded across the Ottoman Empire. The city is flanked by ancient olive groves, stone-paved alleys in the Old City (البلد القديم), and the sounds of a people who have refused, generation after generation, to be erased.

تعود جذور عائلة حدادة إلى مدينة نابلس، واحدة من أعرق المدن التي سكنها البشر باستمرار على وجه الأرض — تقع بين جبل عيبال وجبل جرزيم في شمال الضفة الغربية الفلسطينية. عُرفت في العصور القديمة باسم «شكيم»، ثم أعاد الإمبراطور الروماني فسباسيان تسميتها «فلافيا نيابوليس» عام 72م، وقد كانت نابلس ملتقى الحضارات على مدى أكثر من 9000 سنة.

نابلس مشهورة في العالم العربي بكنافتها الشهيرة التي لا مثيل لها، وبصابون زيت الزيتون الذي صنعته مصانع المدينة العريقة لقرون وتاجرت به عبر أرجاء الدولة العثمانية. تُحيط بالمدينة بساتين الزيتون القديمة وأزقة البلد القديم المرصوفة بالحجر، ويعلو فيها صوت شعب أبى جيلاً بعد جيل أن يُمحى.

📖 A History Lived Through · تاريخٌ عِيش

The Haddadeh family, like all Palestinian families, did not live in a vacuum. They lived through the full arc of Palestinian history — the Ottoman centuries, the British Mandate (1920–1948), the catastrophe of the Nakba in 1948 when over 750,000 Palestinians were displaced, the 1967 war and the occupation of the West Bank, and every chapter since.

Nablus, as a major West Bank city, remained under Jordanian administration after 1948 — sparing it the direct mass displacement of coastal Palestinian cities — but it was not spared conflict. The city lived through the 1967 Six-Day War, when Israel occupied the West Bank, and through every subsequent wave of resistance and pressure. Its people are known for their steadfastness — sumud (صمود) — a quiet, unyielding refusal to disappear.

عائلة حدادة، كسائر العائلات الفلسطينية، لم تعش في فراغ. عاشت القوسَ الكامل للتاريخ الفلسطيني — قرون الحكم العثماني، والانتداب البريطاني (1920–1948)، وكارثة النكبة عام 1948 حين شُرّد أكثر من 750 ألف فلسطيني، وحرب 1967 واحتلال الضفة الغربية، وكل فصل تلا ذلك.

نابلس، بوصفها مدينة كبرى في الضفة الغربية، بقيت تحت الإدارة الأردنية بعد 1948 — مما جنّبها التهجير الجماعي المباشر الذي عاشته مدن الساحل الفلسطيني — غير أنها لم تسلم من الصراع. عاشت المدينة حرب 1967 التي أفضت إلى احتلال إسرائيل للضفة الغربية، وكل موجة مقاومة وضغط تلت ذلك. أهلها معروفون بصمودهم — رفضٌ صامت راسخ للاختفاء.

✈️ 1977 — The Journey Begins · 1977 — بداية الرحلة

In 1977, a young man named Hasan Haddadeh (حسن حدادة) made a decision that would shape the destiny of an entire family. He packed what he could, left the city he loved — Nablus, Palestine — and traveled to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, joining the wave of Arab workers who were helping build the modern Gulf during the oil boom years.

It was not an easy choice. Leaving Nablus meant leaving family, culture, language in its truest street-level form, the smell of the Old City, the taste of its kanafeh. But Hasan carried Palestine with him — in his name, in his values, in the stories he would one day tell his children.

Saudi Arabia became home. His children were born and raised there — growing up as Palestinians in the Gulf, shaped equally by two identities: rooted in Nablus, planted in the Arabian Peninsula. They grew up bilingual, bicultural, carrying the weight and the pride of a displaced people while building their own futures in a new land.

في عام 1977، اتخذ شابٌ يُدعى حسن حدادة قراراً رسم به مصير عائلة بأكملها. حزم ما استطاع، وغادر مدينته التي أحبّ — نابلس، فلسطين — وسافر إلى المملكة العربية السعودية، منضماً إلى موجة العمال العرب الذين ساهموا في بناء الخليج الحديث في سنوات طفرة النفط.

لم يكن الاختيار سهلاً. مغادرة نابلس تعني مغادرة العائلة، والثقافة، واللغة في أصدق تجلياتها، ورائحة البلد القديم، وطعم الكنافة. لكن حسن حمل فلسطين معه — في اسمه، في قيمه، في القصص التي سيحكيها يوماً لأبنائه.

أصبحت المملكة العربية السعودية وطناً. وُلد أبناؤه وترعرعوا فيها — نشأوا فلسطينيين في الخليج، تشكّل وجدانهم بهويتين متساويتين: جذورهم في نابلس، وزرعهم في الجزيرة العربية. كبروا ثنائيي اللغة والثقافة، يحملون ثقل شعب مُهجَّر وكبرياءه، بينما يبنون مستقبلهم بأيديهم في أرض جديدة.

This website is dedicated to Hasan Haddadeh — the man who left so we could arrive. Who sacrificed the familiar so we could build the possible. Who carried Nablus in his heart across every border. This is our way of saying: we remember where we come from. We honour the journey. And we carry it forward.
